MTTF (Mean Time to Failure)

MTTF (mean time to failure) is the average amount of time a non-repairable asset or component is expected to operate before it fails. In maintenance management, MTTF helps technicians estimate how long equipment parts—such as bearings, belts, or fuses—will last under normal use. Unlike MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures), which applies to repairable assets, MTTF is used for items that are replaced after failure. Tracking MTTF supports better planning for spare parts, preventive maintenance, and inventory management, reducing unexpected downtime. For technicians, it’s a practical measure to predict part lifespans and schedule replacements before failures disrupt operations.
